Cylinder Head Reconditioning Process

Our goal is to reclaim existing parts within your cylinder head saving you money. When the cylinder head enters our shop we will talk with you about the history of the head. We will ask if there are water leakage problems such as leaking from the head gasket, radiator pressure cap releasing, white smoke coming from exhaust pipe, milky oil or an engine misfire.

General Crankshaft can repair and recondition your cracked or otherwise damaged aluminum and cast iron cylinder heads to like new condition. Save yourself hundreds of dollars by repairing your old head. We specialize in reconditioning and repair, both in aluminum and cast iron, gas and diesel applications.

The first process is to clean the head. It goes through our wash machine to remove grease and some of the carbon build-up.

Next we will clean carbon from combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports.

The head will then be resurfaced to within .001 flatness.

If we determine the cylinder head needs to have the valves worked on, we will at this point disassemble the head, check guides for wear and clean valve bowels.

The valves will get reconditioned, which involves dressing valve stems, grinding of the valve face and stem ends.

Finally we reassemble the cylinder head installing new oil and cam seals where needed, pre-lubing all valves and cams.
